Hello, friends! The holidays are over and it’s back to reality time! We had a wonderful low key Christmas and winter break! How about you? I hope you had an amazing time!
Even though I enjoyed having the kids at home with me for two weeks, I am so glad to be back into our normal routine. They are very excited to be back at school to see their friends as well!
During the winter break, we had a lot of quiet time at home. We watched fun movies, baked yummy cookies, played board games and and of course, we enjoyed a lot of reading time, specially before bedtime.
As you may have noticed, our family loves to read together every day. Our kids are two bookworms, so I always try to share the books we have been reading lately with you here on the blog!
HarperCollins kindly sent us 6 amazing books over the holidays and it was perfect timing! Kids were home and they were thrilled to dig into these fun books!
1. A Parade of Elephants by Kevin Henkes
2. Horse Meets Dogs by Elliott Kalan & Tim Miller
3. The Rough Patch by Brian Lies
4. Lovely Beasts by Kate Gardner
5. A Home in the Barn by Margaret Wise Brown
6. Mapping Sam by Joyse Hesselberth
A Parade of Elephants is my daughter’s favorite! She is still in pre-school so the big illustrations and repetition are perfect for her. We love the fact it’s very engaging and reinforces basic concepts, such as numbers, shapes, adjectives and adverbs.
My daughter is a huge animal lover and since A Home in a Barn tells the story of animals seeking shelter from the cold snowy day in a big warm barn, it quickly became one of her favorite bedtime stories. She is also loving Lovely Beasts. We love reading this book together as it’s very educational, even for us grown ups. It reveals a different side to creatures commonly considered dangerous, scary, or creepy. Definitely a must-have!
Mapping Sam has been a favorite of both of my kids. They absolutely love reading this book together! Big brother who is 9 and an avid reader, enjoys reading to his sister (who just turned 5) all about Sam’s adventures around the neighborhood. It’s wonderful they get to learn about all different types of maps and diagrams, such as map of cat’s body, transportation map, botanical diagram, diagram of a water molecule and more! They love the fun illustrations!
The Horse Meets Dog is a family favorite as well. It’s SO funny! To give you an idea, it’s a comedy of mistaken species identity between a dog and a horse. It truly is a fun book that makes us laugh so much!
The Rough Patch is my son’s favorite! It’s the perfect light reading for a bedtime story. As I have mentioned, my son is an avid reader, who reads 5th grade level already, so this is the perfect break from the long chapter books he reads after he comes home from school. The book sends a beautiful message of friendship, love, loss and hope.
